The most recent issue of the "Advertising Age" features an article on the badly timed Hassan/Undertaker angle on the July 7 airing of WWE SmackDown!. The article details that Hassan is Italian-American and his real name is Mark Copani.
The following is an excerpt from the article.
"A spokesman for World Wrestling Entertainment has acknowledged that airing a match featuring a supposed Arab-American wrestler named Muhammad Hassan on the day of the London subway and bus bombings was "terrible." Gary Davis told Advertising Age that the WWE has received hundreds of complaints, despite a warning crawl that it aired during the broadcast that some people might find the material offensive. In the match, Hassan and his cohorts were seen entering the ring and beating up a popular wrestler called the Undertaker. Davis said, however, that Hassan is actually an angry, disillusioned Arab-American embracing his roots after experiencing racism following the 9/11 attacks."
In the news section of imdb.com and they have an article about the terrorist angle from SmackDown. Interestingly, it gives Hassan's real name and mentions he is actually of Italian-American descent. You can check that out at imdb.com.
I think the whole hassan character is stupid. It would have been best if they had him wrestle under maybe his real name and had some other kinda gimmick.
Yeah Hassan had a bunch of guys in masks come out during his match with Taker. They beat down Taker and then carried Hassan out like he was a marytr or something. And considering this happened at around the same time of the London bombings WWE was forced to take it out of the show in a lot of venues.
The Hassan character was just a really dumb idea. Let's have a terrorist angle during the War in Iraq thats not a bad idea. No!
The problem is, Hassan's character was originally intended to be positive, but Vince doesn't know when to stop, and they ended up doing what they are now.

Because these henchmen wore masks and camouflage pants, and because Hassan is of Arab descent, some viewers may have leapt to the conclusion that these henchmen are terrorists. They are not, as our viewers will learn in future episodes.

UPN has told WWE that they do not was the Muhammed Hassan character on their network again.
Hassan has been kept off WWE television for the last two weeks ever since they aired footage of him and a terror cell on the same day as the London attacks.
WWE.com addressed the reports of UPN nixing the Hassan character in an update this evening:
"Due to the unfortunate terrorist attacks in London on Thursday, July 7, which coincided with our pre-produced WWE SmackDown! program, UPN has asked us to be sensitive to the usage of the Arab-American character, Muhammad Hassan. We have agreed with UPN, and have not had the character on SmackDown! since that date. It is uncertain as to whether or not the WWE will continue with this character beyond this Sunday's Pay-Per-View, The Great American Bash."

See, at first UPN didn't want Smackdown! anymore, so it looked like it was going to USA with RAW, but now they're saying the Smackdown! will be moving to Friday nights on UPN this fall, whether that will be premanent remains to be seen, so I any case, Smackdown! position anywhere can't be guarunteed.

I don't think he should be fired, as he's not a necessarily bad wrestler, it's just that he was given a character, you know? As a wrestler, he's good, as Muhammad Hassan, he's bad.

I understand what youre saying. I don't think he should be fired either.
I heard about sd! moving to fridays a while ago but i hope it doesn't happen. I watch what I like about you on Fridays and i have to work so i usually have to tape what i like about you which would mean i would also have to find another tv to tape sd on. So that would just be bad.
Chris Rock's new show everybody hates Chris debuts at 8:00 PM on Thursday, Sept. 22 The fall schedule shows Smackdown showing on the following Friday. So I'm guessing that the Fall schedule starts on the 22nd. Not positive though, but that would make sense.
